We reject the proposed extension of presidential term to five years-NPP.

The New Patriotic Party, NPP does not support the proposed extension of Ghana’s presidential term from four years to five years. 

Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Sulemana Tampuli Alhassan, revealed this, saying the party prefers the existing four-year presidential mandate. 

He argued that, the four-year term allows citizens to regularly assess the performance of elected governments within shorter periods. 

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Accra, Mr. Tampuli Alhassan said NPP had taken a different position from both government and the Constitutional Review Committee, CRC on the proposed extension.

The CRC recommended that the presidential term be extended from four to five years. 

The CRC, chaired by Professor. Kwasi Prempeh, recommended extending the presidential term from four to five years during the submission of the report on December 22, 2025 as part of its broader constitutional reform proposals. 

Subsequently government on July 30, 2026 accepted the recommendation, along with a proposal to extend Parliament’s tenure from four years to five years. 

Mr. Tampuli Alhassan said the NPP believes extending the presidential term can weaken regular democratic accountability. 

He said challenges linked to policy implementation, government transitions and the formation of administrations should instead be addressed through greater efficiency and timely decision-making. 

The NPP has also indicated that it will present its position on the wider constitutional reform proposals, saying any changes to the 1992 Constitution should be based on broad consultation and consensus.
