UESD SET TO INTRODUCE DIPLOMA IN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION TO TRAIN JOURNALISTS IN CLIMATE CHANGE REPORTING

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development, UESD, is set to introduce a Diploma in Environmental Communication to equip journalists with specialized skills in reporting climate change, green innovation, and sustainable development. 

The programme, targeted at interested members of the Eastern Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association, was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson, at the close of a two-day media training workshop in Koforidua.

The workshop themed "Reporting Green Innovation: Strengthening Media Engagement for Sustainable Development," sought to strengthen the capacity of journalists to identify, understand, and effectively communicate stories on environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive development. 

Professor Nyarko-Sampson explained that the diploma programme will be offered under the Nkabom Collaborative, through which UESD is implementing the Agro-Waste Management and Aquaculture Technology Entrepreneurship Initiative. He encouraged journalists to take advantage of the opportunity when admissions open.

The Vice-Chancellor said the training workshop forms part of efforts to prepare journalists to report on key milestones of the Agro-Waste Management and Aquaculture Technology Entrepreneurship Initiative, highlight the success stories of youth, women, and communities benefiting from the project, and promote accurate, solutions-driven reporting on green innovation across the country. 

He stressed that well-informed and consistent media coverage is critical to the success of the initiative and called on journalists to become active partners in shaping public discourse on climate-resilient livelihoods, sustainable agriculture, and opportunities for women, young people, and other vulnerable groups.

The Nkabom Collaborative brings together the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Koforidua Technical University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Ghana, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ashesi University, the Association of Ghana Industries, and McGill University of Canada.

Under the partnership, UESD is leading an initiative that transforms agricultural waste into valuable products, promotes technology-driven aquaculture, and creates employment and entrepreneurship opportunities within Ghana's sustainable agri-food sector.
