UESD ORGANIZES A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON GREEN REPORTING FOR GJA MEMBERS IN THE EASTERN REGION
The University of Environment and Sustainable Development, UESD, Somanya, has organized a two-day workshop training in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, for members of the Ghana Journalists Association in the Eastern Region.
The training is aimed at strengthening the capacity of GJA members in the region to identify, understand, and effectively communicate stories of innovation that promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive development.
The workshop, which was on the theme “Reporting Green Innovation, Strengthening Media Engagement for Sustainable Development,” forms part of the UESD’s Nkabom Collaborative Project with partnership from the MasterCard Foundation and McGill University in Canada.
It brought together journalists, editors, and communication practitioners of the association to deepen understanding of the University’s green innovation agenda and to build a stronger, more informed partnership between UESD and the media in telling the story of sustainable development in Ghana.
Addressing the participants, the Project Administrator, Mary Abena Agyepong, noted that the media remains one of the most influential institutions in shaping public understanding, influencing policy discourse, and driving behavioral change.
She added that as the world continues to confront pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and food insecurity, there is the need for accurate, evidence-based, and compelling reporting on green innovations, hence, the training for the selected journalists.
The Vice Chancellor of UESD, and the Principal Investigator, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, underscored the importance of media practitioners in environmental and waste management issues; hence, the workshop to upgrade the knowledge of GJA members in the region to help address environmental and waste management issues confronting the country.
He said the university is poised to train more human resources to man environmental and aquaculture development in the country.
The Eastern Regional Chairman of GJA, Stephen Ampem Darko-Koranteng, commended the University for convening the platform to educate GJA members in the region on issues that affect the environment.
He noted that the pen, microphone, and camera are powerful, and when these tools are focused on the environment, they become instruments of survival.
The UESD Nkabom Collaborative is a partnership between UESD and Koforidua Technical University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Ghana, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ashesi University, the Association of Ghana Industries, and McGill University, Canada.
Under this partnership, UESD is leading the Agro-Waste Management and Aquaculture Technology Entrepreneurship Initiative, a green innovation designed to convert agricultural waste into useful products, strengthen aquaculture through technology, and build youth employment and entrepreneurship around sustainable agri-food systems.
