Spain crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup Champions after extra-time victory over Argentina

Spain has been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina by a goal to nil in the final at the MetLife Stadium in the United States of America. 

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, calmly finishing from close range after being set up by fellow substitute Nico Williams to end Argentina's resistance and secure Spain's second FIFA World Cup title.

The victory marks Spain's second World Cup triumph and their second appearance in the final, having won their maiden title in 2010 after defeating the Netherlands in South Africa.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, was the first in the tournament's history to feature an expanded 48-team format, making it the largest World Cup ever staged.

Spain also dominated the individual awards. Captain Rodrigo Hernández Cascante was named the tournament's Best Player, winning the Golden Ball, while goalkeeper Unai Simón received the Golden Glove as the competition's best goalkeeper. Defender Pau Cubarsí was crowned Best Young Player, and France striker Kylian Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament's top scorer with 10 goals.

Spain's triumph capped an impressive campaign under head coach Luis de la Fuente, as they lifted the coveted trophy in front of a record crowd.

The next World Cup in 2030, will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with centenary opening matches scheduled to be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
