GPRTU SUSPENDS PLANNED 30 PERCENT FARE INCREASE

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, has announced that the union has suspended its decision to increase transport fares by 30 percent following engagements with the Ministry of Transport.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Amoah said the union heeded to the Ministry’s request after receiving assurances that fuel prices will reduce in the next pricing window. 

He noted that the proposed fare adjustment was not solely due to rising fuel prices but also driven by increasing costs of vehicle spare parts, taxes and other operational expenses.

Mr. Amoah explained that the union will be compelled to reconsider a fare increment if fuel prices increase in the next pricing window. According to him, the GPRTU will follow the necessary procedures and engage relevant stakeholders before implementing any adjustment in transport fares.

The development follows an earlier warning by the union that transport fares could increase by thirty percent if government failed to address rising fuel prices. 

The union argued that commercial drivers were struggling to cope with escalating operating costs, making a fare review necessary to sustain their businesses.
