Government to extend One Million Coders Programme to Senior High Schools

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed plans to extend the government’s flagship One Million Coders Programme to some senior high schools across the country.

The initiative is aimed at equipping students with digital skills to prepare them for emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence and the wider digital economy.

Mr. George made this known when he visited Bright Senior High School at Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region as part of a working visit to inspect some infrastructure facilities of the Ministry across the region.

The Minister urged the management of Bright SHS to express interest in having the school onboarded onto the One Million Coders Programme, saying participating institutions will not only receive access to the programme’s digital training but also infrastructure support.

“If we have that expression of interest from you, I can commit that the Ministry will be willing to set up an ICT lab for you. You will also benefit from other infrastructure support under the programme,” he said.

He also encouraged the students to take advantage of the programme, which he said will provide them with skills needed to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the digital economy.

The visit comes at a time when Bright SHS is receiving national attention following its historic performance in the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

The school made history as the first private school to advance to the semi-final stage of the competition, defeating seeded Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) and Presbyterian Senior High Technical School, Aburi, at the one-eighth stage before overcoming Amaniampong SHS and Chemu SHTS in the quarter-finals.

Mr. George congratulated the management, teachers and students of Bright SHS for the achievement and urged them to build on the feat.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, also congratulated the school for its historic NSMQ campaign, describing the achievement as a source of pride and happiness for the region.

The occasion was also used to welcome and celebrate the Bright SHS NSMQ team following its historic campaign.

Bright SHS was established in 2007 as a private co-educational institution and has, over the years, built a reputation for academic excellence, emerging in recent years as one of the best performing schools in the Eastern Region.

The school’s management is expected to engage the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations to enrol its students onto the One Million Coders Programme as it seeks to strengthen their digital skills and prepare them for opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
