Government allocates GH¢400 million to acquire buses for state-owned transport operators – Finance Minister

Government has allocated GH¢400 million for the acquisition of high-occupancy buses to expand the fleets of state-owned transport operators as part of efforts to improve public transportation across the country.

The allocation was announced by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament yesterday.

According to the Finance Minister, the investment forms part of government's commitment to improving urban mobility by providing Ghanaians with safe, reliable and affordable public transport services.

He explained that the new buses will be added to the fleets of Metro Mass Transit and the State Transport Company (STC) to increase their operational capacity and improve service delivery.

Dr. Forson said the intervention is expected to ease pressure on the country's public transport system by expanding transport capacity, particularly on high-demand urban and intercity routes where commuters often face long waiting times.

He noted that the additional buses will help reduce passenger queues during peak travel periods while offering a more reliable and efficient alternative to the use of private vehicles.
