Ghana water Limited completes Kpong–Tema pipeline replacement
The Ghana Water Limited has completed the replacement of weak sections of the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines, paving the way for the resumption of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
A release issued by the Company noted that the maintenance exercise, which involved sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch, or 525-millimetre and one thousand and 50-millimetre pipelines, began on Thursday, August sixth, 2026.
The Company said the work was completed on schedule, despite a number of technical and operational challenges. Though water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant, the company said consumers should not expect an immediate return to continuous water supply.
According to the Ghana Water Limited, the restoration of supply will be gradual as the transmission pipelines and reservoirs are filled and pressure across the network is rebuilt.
However, the company's water demand management and rationing programme will remain in force. The release urged consumers in affected communities to continue observing their usual water rationing schedules while the system stabilises.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance teams and technical personnel who worked on the project.
He also praised the Lead and Chief Manager of ATMA Production, Ing. Dr. Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, for their leadership and commitment.
Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the project demonstrates the importance of teamwork, technical expertise and strong coordination in addressing critical water infrastructure challenges.
He expressed appreciation to the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, particularly its Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG Technical Team for their support during the exercise. The ECG team, according to him, worked closely with its personnel, to resolve critical electrical and operational issues and facilitate the timely restart of water production.
The Ghana Water Limited appealed to residents in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions to remain patient as the network is progressively recharged, reservoirs replenished and water pressure restored.
The company assured that it will continue to closely monitor the transmission system and remains committed to proactive maintenance, infrastructure modernisation and improved water supply .
