Football Star David Owori Killed After Resisting Attempts to Steal His Phone

Famous Ugandan player David Owori has died after being attacked and beaten by suspected robbers in the capital, Kampala, for reportedly resisting attempts to steal his phone. The death has sparked widespread grief across the country's sporting community. Owori, 27, who was popularly known by the nickname "Colgate," succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital after being assaulted on Tuesday in a suburb of Kampala. According to local authorities, he was attacked after allegedly resisting attempts by the assailants to steal his mobile phone. Passersby reportedly found the footballer lying unconscious following the attack and rushed him to hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His death comes only weeks after the killing of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, who was assaulted by a mob in Kampala after being mistakenly identified as a thief. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sports Club Villa described Owori's death as a devastating loss to both the club and the country. "The Club commiserates with David's family, teammates, friends, supporters, and the entire football fraternity during this painful moment. David was a valuable player, leader, and servant of the game whose loss is deeply felt by both the Club and the nation," the club said. The club also called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted. "We also call upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently pursue, apprehend, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime," the statement added.
